Understanding the Problem to Create Real Solutions
About 3.5 billion people or 44 percent of the global population remain poor by the world standard of $6.85 per day. It is estimated that 72 million people are living in extreme poverty as defined by living on $2.15 per day and 1.2 billion people experience multidimensional poverty. There has been very little improvement in these numbers since the 1990’s
Sudan has an extreme poverty rate of 82.3 percent of the population. The country has been plagued for several years by civil war and political conflict which has left the country in a depressed state. The impact of climate change on Sudan is profound making reliance on agriculture increasingly difficult. Water supply, including shortages and sanitation is also a major issue as many communities rely on unsafe sources which only increase the health crisis.
Somalia has a poverty rate of 76.8 percent. The country has been ravaged by conflict, drought and famine over a long period. Instability has destroyed livelihoods, leaving families homeless and in need of shelter. Top humanitarian organizations are the only lifeline for many.
Nigeria has a poverty rate of 70 percent, but it is a nation rich in natural resources. Widespread corruption and conflict account for the struggles of millions of people, especially outside the cities where the conditions are bleak. Children do not have access to primary education, leaving them trapped in a cycle of poverty. There is an urgent call for systemic change to help citizens move from a feeling of helplessness.
Pakistan has a poverty rate of 68.8 percent caused by economic and political instability and inadequate access to education and healthcare.
India is known for its rapid economic growth but still has a poverty rate of 64.9 percent. Much of the impoverished population live in rural areas where access to resources is limited. The vast majority are in urgent need of emergency help in all areas of survival which will only come with innovative solutions that address the systemic problems.
There are many other countries which are suffering from acute poverty, but the issues are consistent with the top five countries described above. The situation requires a multifaceted approach which will include WPS, LLC along with a group of strategic partners, all of whom can address different aspects of the main causes of world poverty.
